Is driver’s education required in order to get an Kentucky learner’s permit?
No driver’s education is required for obtaining a learner’s permit.

But once you obtain a permit, if you are under 18 years old, you are required to have at least 60 hours of driving practice with a supervising licensed driver over 21. Ten of those hours must be done at night. You must also show proof of these hours. You have up to 12 months after getting your license to take a 4 hour Graduated Licensing education course.

How do I pass the Kentucky permit test?
To pass your Kentucky permit test, you are expected to know Kentucky traffic laws, road signs, and rules for safe driving. All material will be taken from the Kentucky Driver’s License manual, which is what our FREE DMV practice test questions are based on. Subjects will cover sharing the road, meaning of road signs, navigating Intersections, speeding consequences, drinking and driving laws.

There are 30 multiple choice questions on the permit test. You need to get at least 80% in both sections in order to pass. I failed my Kentucky permit test, what should I do?
If you failed your written test, you won’t be given a permit. You may take the test again the next business day. You are allowed to take the written test a total of 6 times without penalty, if you fail all 6 times you will have to wait 6 months before you are eligible to take the written test again.

Who may I have in the car with me while driving in Kentucky with a learner's permit?
A supervising licensed driver age 21 or older must be sitting in the car next to you. In addition to the supervising driver, you may have as many passengers as there are seat belts. Unless the passengers are direct family members, you may not have more than one passenger in the car age younger than 20.

Will I have to pass a road test when I move to Kentucky from another state?
Usually no road test is required. But once you become a resident, you have 30 days to exchange your out of state license for a Kentucky license. You must bring a social security card and proof of address to the local Circuit Court Clerk’s office.
Is my out-of-state learners permit valid in Kentucky?
Yes, you may drive with you out-of-state learner’s permit in Kentucky. You must adhere to the rules of both your home state and Kentucky. If you become a resident of Kentucky, you must exchange your out-of-state learner’s permit for a Kentucky learner’s permit.
